How to choose the right mini dumper for your job
A mini dumper is chosen on the basis of three things: how much weight it has to carry, where it has to pass and how it has to unload. Everything else – engine, tracks or wheels, type of tipping – follows from these.
1. Load capacity and bed volume
The load capacity is the maximum load in kilograms; the bed volume is how much material fits in. With heavy materials, the weight limit is reached before the volume limit. One cubic metre of wet soil weighs about 1,600–1,800 kg, so a 0.26 m³ bed filled with soil already reaches around 450 kg.
- 300 kg: gardens, small maintenance jobs, narrow passages.
- 500 kg: renovations, building sites and medium-sized landscaping work.
- 800 kg: continuous earthmoving, excavation and demolition.
2. Tracks or wheels
Tracks spread the weight over a large surface: they are the right choice on mud, loose soil, lawns and sand, where a wheel would sink. The pneumatic wheels of electric wheelbarrows are better suited to compact or paved surfaces such as yards, greenhouses, warehouses and stables, and make the machine lighter and easier to manoeuvre.
3. Power source
- Petrol (Lifan 6.5 hp, Briggs & Stratton from 6.5 to 13.5 hp): quick start, low costs, ideal for occasional or medium use.
- Kubota D722 diesel (3 cylinders, 13.7 hp): more torque and endurance for intensive professional use.
- Battery electric: zero exhaust emissions, low noise and possible indoor use. Autonomy up to 10–12 hours depending on the model and use.
4. Type of unloading
- Front: the most common, for unloading on the ground.
- High tip: the bed lifts before tipping, so you can unload directly into skips, containers or truck beds.
- Side tip: useful for filling trenches and excavations along the way, without manoeuvring.
5. Machine width
Measure the narrowest passage on site, such as garden gates, doors or paths. The DELEKS® range goes from 70 cm (compact 300 kg model) to 87 cm (500 kg hydrostatic mini dumpers).
6. Safety on slopes
Stability decreases as the load increases and on soft ground. Always respect the slope limits given in the model's operating manual and travel in a straight line, without turning or stopping across the slope.
| Type | Power source | Load capacity | Bed volume | Unloading | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact tracked mini dumper | Petrol, Lifan 6.5 hp | 300 kg | — | Front | Gardens, small sites, 70 cm passages |

| Heavy-duty hydrostatic tracked mini dumper | Petrol, Briggs & Stratton 13.5 hp | 800 kg | 0.26 m³ | High or three-way swivel (180°) | Intensive earthmoving |
| Diesel tracked mini dumper | Diesel, Kubota D722 13.7 hp | 800 kg | 0.26 m³ | High or three-way swivel (180°) | Continuous professional use |
| Electric wheelbarrow | Lead-acid or lithium battery | Up to 400 kg rated | 0.22 m³ | Front, manual or electric | Greenhouses, stables, indoor and residential areas |
Can a mini dumper be used on hills or sloping ground?
Yes, but within precise limits. Tracks provide more grip than wheels, and the hydrostatic transmission allows progressive speed control, which is especially useful downhill. Stability, however, depends on the load and the ground, not just on traction. Rules to follow at all times:
- travel in a straight line uphill and downhill, without turning or stopping across the slope;
- reduce the load as the slope increases;
- the operator must never stand between the machine and the downhill side, whether the machine is loaded or empty;
- do not manoeuvre on piles of soil or loose ground.
The slope limits of each model are given in the operating manual.
What is the maximum slope for an electric wheelbarrow?
It depends on the model and above all on the load: the fuller the bed, the lower the limit. On soft, wet or grassy ground the values are even lower. For DELEKS® electric wheelbarrows, the limits for each load range are given in the "Slope table by load" sheet, available for download on the product page. As a general rule, with heavy loads travel on level ground only.
Can mud, liquids or concrete be transported?
Mud and wet materials, yes: the bed is made of steel and the tracks work well on muddy ground too. Loose liquids in the bed, on the other hand, are not recommended: they move while driving and shift the centre of gravity, increasing the risk of tipping over, especially when turning or on slopes. To transport liquids, use closed, securely fastened containers. Fresh concrete can be transported by filling the bed only partially and driving slowly.
What is high tipping and is it suitable for loading a van or truck?
On high-tip mini dumpers the bed lifts vertically before tipping. This lets you unload directly into the body of a van or truck, or into a skip, without shovels or double handling. Before buying, compare the dump height stated on the product page with the height of your vehicle's side panel.
When is side or swivel tipping the better choice?
When material has to be deposited along the way, for example to fill trenches and excavations or to unload beside a narrow path without manoeuvring. On models with a swivel bed, unloading is possible in several directions, up to 180°, without moving the machine.
How long does an electric wheelbarrow battery last? Is it enough for a full working day?
The stated autonomy ranges from 8 to 12 hours depending on the battery type, so it covers a standard working day. Real autonomy is reduced by heavy loads, frequent climbs and soft ground. On models with a removable battery, a second charged battery can be kept as a spare for long shifts.
How long does it take to charge the battery?
From a normal 220V household socket, charging usually takes 6 to 8 hours, depending on the battery type and the remaining charge. The most practical solution is to charge overnight.
Lead-acid or lithium battery: which should you choose?
A lead-acid battery costs less and is suitable for regular use with full recharges; it must always be stored fully charged to prevent deterioration. A lithium battery offers more autonomy, faster charging, lower weight and a longer service life in charge cycles, and tolerates partial charging better.
What is the difference between a mini dumper and a motorised wheelbarrow?
The term mini dumper generally refers to a tracked machine with a combustion engine and a load capacity of 300 to 800 kg, designed for building sites and difficult ground. A motorised wheelbarrow is lighter, runs on wheels, is often electric and is mainly used on compact surfaces.
How much soil can a 500 kg mini dumper carry?
About 0.3 m³ of wet soil, which weighs around 1,600–1,800 kg per cubic metre. With light materials such as leaves, brushwood or wood chips, the limit becomes the volume of the bed instead.
Is a petrol, diesel or electric mini dumper better?
Petrol is suitable for occasional or medium use. Diesel is the choice for many hours of work every day. Electric is the right choice for working indoors, in residential areas or wherever zero emissions and low noise are required.
Can you work early in the morning without disturbing residents?
With an electric wheelbarrow, yes. Without a combustion engine, noise is greatly reduced and there are no exhaust fumes, so you can start work early in residential complexes, apartment blocks, parks and communal areas without disturbing the neighbours. It is a solution much appreciated by gardeners and grounds maintenance companies. Always check the working hours set by local and building regulations.
Will a mini dumper fit through a garden gate?
Width varies from model to model: the most compact ones fit even through narrow garden gates. Measure the narrowest passage on your route and compare it with the width stated on the product page.
Are service and spare parts available?
Yes. The machines are CE compliant and spare parts are available through the express spare parts service.
