How to choose the right plough for your tractor
Before choosing the type of plough, check three things about your tractor: power, distance between the lift arms and three-point hitch category. If the plough is compatible, the rest depends on the job.
1. Single-furrow, two-furrow or reversible
- Single-furrow: one mouldboard, light and easy to handle even with 12–25 hp tractors. It is the classic plough for vegetable gardens, gardens and small plots.
- Two-furrow: two mouldboards side by side double the working width and halve the number of passes. It needs a tractor of at least 25 hp.
- Reversible: at the end of the field the mouldboard is flipped with a lever and you come back turning the soil to the same side, without open furrows in the middle.
2. Power and weight
The lightest ploughs, around 50 kg, already work with 12 hp. The sturdier models and the two-furrow plough, up to 116 kg, need 25 to 40 hp. The tractor must lift the plough while remaining stable, with front ballast if necessary.
3. Distance between the lift arms
Measure the distance between the two lower lift arms of your tractor and compare it with the value stated on each plough's product page: across the range it goes from about 36 to 85 cm, with an adjustable span for each model. All ploughs have a category 1 hitch with 19–22 mm pins.
4. Furrow width and adjustments
Each mouldboard opens a furrow 30 to 36 cm wide. The depth wheel controls depth and keeps the plough level while working; the tilt is adjusted to keep the mouldboard vertical; the offset moves the plough sideways, to line the furrow up with the tractor wheel or work close to rows and edges.
5. Short mouldboard for ridging
Some models have a short mouldboard that lets you plough and ridge close to plants without damaging them. It is useful in vegetable gardens and between rows.
6. Soil and tractor
The ploughs work on clay and sandy soils. If the ground is very compacted, a pass with a ripper before ploughing is worthwhile. The ploughs in the range are designed for wheeled tractors: for tracked tractors, check compatibility on the product page.
| Type | Mouldboards | Tractor power | Furrow width | Weight | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light single-furrow | 1 | 12–30 hp | about 30 cm | 50–60 kg | Vegetable gardens, compact and articulated tractors |
| Heavy-duty single-furrow | 1 | 25–40 hp | 31–36 cm | 60–85 kg | Orchards, narrow wheeled tractors |
| Reversible | 1, reversible | 14–35 hp | about 30 cm | about 80 kg | Ploughing in both directions |
| Two-furrow | 2 | 25–40 hp | 2 × 31 cm | about 116 kg | Larger areas, vineyards |
What is the difference between a single-furrow and a two-furrow plough?
The single-furrow plough has one mouldboard and is lighter, so it also suits the smallest tractors. The two-furrow plough has two mouldboards, works a double strip on each pass and needs a more powerful tractor, of at least 25 hp.
When is a reversible plough worthwhile?
When you want to plough in both directions without leaving open furrows in the middle of the field, for example on regular plots where it is convenient to work back and forth. It is flipped by hand with a lever at the end of each run.
How do I know if the plough fits my tractor?
Check four things: the recommended power, the category 1 three-point hitch with 19–22 mm pins, the distance between the lower lift arms and the type of tractor. The ploughs in the range are designed for wheeled tractors. The data for each model are on the product page.
What is the depth wheel for?
The depth wheel rests on the ground and controls the working depth, keeping the plough level and the furrow even. It is included on all ploughs in the range.
How do you adjust a plough?
There are three adjustments: depth, with the depth wheel and the top link; tilt, to keep the mouldboard vertical; offset, to move the plough sideways and line the furrow up with the tractor's rear wheel. They are all manual.
How deep should you plough a vegetable garden?
Usually between 20 and 30 cm, depending on the soil and the crops. On heavy soils it is best not to go too deep in the first year and to increase gradually.
Can a plough be used for ridging plants?
Yes, with the short-mouldboard models: they work close to plants without damaging them and let you ridge potatoes, vegetables and rows.
What maintenance does a plough need?
Very little: regularly check the bolts and the wear of mouldboard and point, grease the depth wheel and clean the plough after use. Mouldboards and spare parts are available through the express spare parts service.
