How to choose the right potato digger for your tractor
The choice depends mainly on tractor power, working width and the area to harvest.
1. How it works
The share goes into the ground under the row and lifts potatoes and soil. The vibration of the share and the sieve makes the soil fall through and leaves the crop on the surface, clean and undamaged, ready to pick up by hand. No digging or forking the row by hand.
2. Power and working width
The small model works with 12 to 35 hp tractors, has a 47 cm working width and a category 1 hitch: it suits vegetable gardens and single rows. The large model needs 35 to 60 hp, works about 63 cm wide with a category 1 and 2 hitch, and suits larger areas.
3. Rear or side discharge sieve
On the small model the sieve is at the rear and leaves the crop behind the machine. On the large model the sieve is transverse and lays the crop to one side in a neat row, so it is not covered or run over on the next pass.
4. Adjustments and hitch
The digging depth is adjustable to suit the crop and the soil. Check the distance between the lower lift arms: 45–76 cm for the small model and 56–82 cm for the large one. Anti-vibration silent blocks keep the machine stable, even on slopes.
5. Safety
Never approach the share, the sieve or the PTO shaft while the PTO is engaged, and check that the guards are intact. Work at a steady speed, lift the digger at the end of the row and disengage the PTO before getting off the tractor.
| Type | Tractor power | Working width | Hitch | Weight | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small potato digger | 12–35 hp | 47 cm | Cat. 1 | about 165 kg | Vegetable gardens and single rows, compact tractors such as Kubota, Iseki, BCS |
| Large potato digger | 35–60 hp | about 63 cm | Cat. 1 and 2 | about 272 kg | Larger areas, tractors up to 60 hp |
Does the potato digger also work for onions and garlic?
Yes, it is designed for potatoes, onions, garlic and tubers and bulbs grown in rows in general. The depth is adjusted to suit the crop.
Is the potato digger compatible with my tractor?
Yes, if the tractor has a 540 rpm PTO, the stated power (12–35 hp for the small model, 35–60 hp for the large one), the three-point hitch of the required category and a compatible distance between the lower arms. These are implements for small tractors, not for high-power tractors.
Is the PTO shaft included?
Yes, both models come with a CE-approved PTO shaft.
Are the potatoes damaged during harvesting?
If the depth is set correctly, the share passes under the tubers without cutting them, and the sieve lays them on the surface without crushing them. It is worth testing on a short stretch of row and adjusting the depth before carrying on.
Can it be used on heavy soils or on slopes?
Yes, it works both on flat ground and on slopes, and the anti-vibration silent blocks keep the machine stable. On wet clay soils the soil is harder to separate: it is best to harvest when the ground is dry.
What maintenance does it need?
Regularly check the bolts, the wear of the share and the condition of the sieve, and grease the PTO shaft and moving parts. Spare parts are available through the express spare parts service.
