How to choose the right grading blade for your tractor

The choice depends on width, tractor power and type of arm.

1. Width and power
The blade should be wider than the tractor's track width, so the wheels run on ground that has already been levelled. Blades from 110 to 170 cm work with 12 to 45 hp tractors; the 175 and 200 cm blades need 35 to 80 hp; the heavy-duty 225 and 250 cm series are for 70 to 100 hp tractors.

2. Fixed or offset arm
Fixed-arm blades are angled by hand to push soil to the side as you drive. Offset-arm blades can also be moved to the right or left of the tractor, to work along walls, fences and ditches or widen the pass without driving on the edge.

3. Pushing or pulling
The blade works in both directions: pulled forwards to level and finish the ground, and pushed in reverse to move heaps of soil, gravel or snow.

4. Hitch and weight
The light blades have a category 1 three-point hitch; the reinforced and heavy-duty ones category 1 and 2. Check the distance between the lower lift arms stated on the product page, as it depends on the model. Weight ranges from about 105 to 395 kg: with the heaviest blades, use front ballast to keep the tractor stable.

5. Uses and safety
Besides levelling, the blade is used to maintain farm tracks and driveways, scrape manure in livestock buildings and clear snow. Work at moderate speed, lower the blade to the ground after use and check the wear of the cutting edge regularly.

What is the difference between a grading blade, a rear blade and a levelling blade?

They are different names for the same implement: a blade mounted on the tractor's three-point hitch at the rear, used to level ground and move material.

Which width should I choose?

A blade slightly wider than the tractor's track width and suited to its power: 110 to 170 cm for tractors up to 45 hp, 175 to 200 cm up to 80 hp, and 225 to 250 cm for 70 to 100 hp tractors.

Fixed or offset arm?

A fixed arm is simpler and lighter, and is enough for levelling and moving material in front of or behind the tractor. An offset arm lets you move the blade to the side, which is useful for working along edges, walls and ditches.

Can it be used for snow?

Yes, the blade is also used to clear snow from roads, yards and driveways, pushing in reverse or pulling.

Is it used pushing or pulling?

Both: pulled forwards to level, and pushed in reverse to move heaps of material.

Is the blade compatible with my tractor?

Check the recommended power, the three-point hitch category and the distance between the lower lift arms, stated on each model's product page. The light blades are for compact tractors such as Kubota, Iseki or BCS; the reinforced and heavy-duty series for medium-power tractors.

Does the cutting edge wear out?

Yes, it is the part that works in contact with the ground. It is made of steel and should be checked regularly; on offset-arm blades the blade is reversible and replaceable, and spare parts are available through the express spare parts service.
